Girl Power: The Nineties Revolution in Music - Marisa Meltzer
Meltzer's book starts with Riot Grrrl and grunge, moving onto the Spice Girls and boybands, although it's mostly focussed on the female bands, singers, festivals, and the diverse groups that formed around these different things. I was 4 in 1990 so some of this passed me by, but I was definitely a Spice Girls fan, and I've heard of a lot of the other bands and singers she writes about. It's written in an accessible way, and split into chapters covering each section of Nineties music as covered by Meltzer. She charts the rise of Britney Spears, and the shift from reclaiming female sexuality at the beginning of the Ninetines to the packaging of it at the end of the decade. It's an interesting book, and Meltzer clearly knows her subject. If you're interested in the music of the era, then this is a good place to start.
