The Lies of Locke Lamora - Scott Lynch

I'm a big fantasy fiction geek. Give me another world where things are not like here and I'm happy! This book is set in the city state of Camorr, a little like 16th Century Venice mixed with London at that time I reckon. A world where an alien race thousands of years before, once lived and built brilliant sculptures and buildings out of a mysterious substance called Elderglass. Now it's the home of Locke Lamora and his gang the Gentlemen Bastards. They're not the only gang, but all criminals pay tribute to the Capa out on his boat in the Floating Grave. But things are about to change, for the Capa, the criminal underworld, the ruling nobility, and most of all for master of disguises, Locke Lamora, and his friends.
This is a fast paced, twisty novel. Full of clever little flashbacks to the training of the GBs, and how they learnt to do what they do. They've got the biggest con of their careers underway and Lamora is going to have to use every trick he knows to keep himself alive, after the Grey King starts killing off the gang leaders (or garrista) around him. I'm hoping the next book in the sequence (Red Seas Under Red Skies) is as good whenever I get hold of it!
